Catania
Catania (Italian: [kaˈtaːnja]) is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse. It is the capital of the Province of Catania, and is the second-largest city in Sicily, the tenth in Italy, and the hundredth-largest city in the European Union.
Catania is known for its seismic history, having been destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1169, another in 1693, and several volcanic eruptions from the neighboring Mount Etna volcano, the most violent of which was in 1669.
Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434, it witnessed the opening of the first university in Sicily. Then in the 14th century and into the Renaissance period, Catania was one of Italy's most important and flourishing cultural, artistic, and political centers.
Geography
Catania is located on the east coast of the main island of Sicily, at the foot of the Mount Etna.
As observed by Strabo the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna was both a source of benefits and of evils. On the one hand, the violent outbursts of the volcano from time to time desolated great parts of the city's territory. On the other, the volcanic ashes produced fertile soil, especially suitable for the growth of vines. (Strab. vi. p. 269.)

Province of Catania
Catania (Italian: Provincia di Catania; Sicilian: Pruvincia di Catania) is a province in the autonomous island region of Sicily in Italy. Its capital is the city of Catania.
It has an area of 3,552 square kilometres (1,371 sq mi) and a total population of about 1.1 million. There are 58 comunes (Italian: comuni) in the province , see Comunes of the Province of Catania. The main comunes by population are:
Territory
The province faces the Ionian Sea to the east, the Province of Messina to the north, the Province of Enna and the Province of Caltanissetta to the west, the Province of Siracusa and the Province of Ragusa to the south. Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano is located in the province.
Major roads
There are many major roads that cross the territory of the province. The S.S 114 (Messina-Catania-Siracusa) links many of the coastal towns from Messina to Siracusa, the S.S 121 (Catania-Caltanissetta-Palermo), which links the east coast to Palermo through the major towns of Misterbianco, Paternò and Adrano. There are also the A18 Messina-Catania and A19 Catania-Palermo motorways that pass through the province.

Welcome to Catania, Sicily. In this week's video we're exploring the real Sicily. Catania is Sicily's second biggest city. A few videos ago we were in Palermo and throughout the video we'll be comparing the two cities, is Catania better than Palermo? We start things off at a church in Catania called Chiesa di San Nicolo L'Arena. We explore inside the church but then visit the rooftop to get the best views of Catania including the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna (the most active volcano in Europe). Welcome to Catania, Sicily. In this week's video we're exploring the real Sicily. Catania is Sicily's second biggest city. A few videos ago we were in Palermo and throughout the video we'll be comparing the two cities, is Catania better than Palermo?
We start things off at a church in Catania called Chiesa di San Nicolo L'Arena. We explore inside the church but then visit the rooftop to get the best views of Catania including the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna (the most active volcano in Europe).
Afterwards we head to a place called Canusciuti Sicilian Cafe to try a couple of different types of Arancine.
Not far from the cafe we came across an ancient Roman (Greek?) amphitheatre so made our way inside to check it out. We then headed to the main square in Catania where we saw the main cathedral in the city as well as the Elephant Fountain.
One of our favourite things about Catania was discovering some more local places. We went to a place called BarnAut to get a beer. It has a very local, bohemian vibe to it.
Lastly, since we've mainly been eating Sicilian and Italian food we decided it's time for something else. We made our way to a Korean restaurant called Panda where we had a few different (and delicious) Korean dishes.

In this episode, we get a little lost in Catania as we attempt to tell the difference between universities and monasteries! We find Sicily's largest church, get lost in the hallways of Europes 2nd largest monastery, and tour a 13th-century royal castle in Catania, Italy.
Catania is the second-largest Sicilian city after Palermo. It was destroyed to the ground seven times by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes from Mount Etna. The most recent catastrophic events in 1169 and 1693 forced the inhabitants to rebuild the city from scratch. The origin of the city dates back to 730 B.C. during the first arrival of ancient Greeks and this was the beginning of a long series of invasions and conquests.

How to spend a day in Catania?
In today's travel vlog, we explore Sicily's second largest city, Catania in 4k. During this summer we explored the eastern side of the biggest island in Italy and Catania is our first stop.
As with most of my vlogs, I give recommendations of what local food you must eat in the region, as well as the best restaurants and bars. We go to the famous Fish food market, La Pescheria to try some delicious seafood cones, we freshen up with the famous Sicilian Granita, try some local wine and appetizers by a local trattoria, go for Sunset views at the best rooftop bar in the Via Etna (The main street) and finish it off with a great dinner at one of the most praised restaurants of the city, Me Cumpadi Turiddu, where they serve traditional Sicilian dishes with a modern twist.
Besides food, we go sightseeing in some of the most recognizable sights of the city such as the main square where everything happens, the Piazza del Duomo and we climb the stairs to the top of the Chiesa della Badia di Sant'Agata to admire the city. I highly recommend you including this amazing view as one of the first things to do so you can get a sense of the sights.

Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants. Catania has the best pistachio pastries in the world and the best pistachio ice cream. The churches and the palaces are stunning and the baroque architecture will amaze you. Stayed in the most beautiful luxury bed and breakfast in the historical center in Catania and loved every second. Solo travelling in Catania was amazing and I definitely need to come back for the Etna mountains and Palazzo Biscari. What have I missed in Catania? Would you like to travel here? Welcome to Catania, Sicily. In this week's video we're exploring the real Sicily. Catania is Sicily's second biggest city. A few videos ago we were in Palermo and throughout the video we'll be comparing the two cities, is Catania better than Palermo?
We start things off at a church in Catania called Chiesa di San Nicolo L'Arena. We explore inside the church but then visit the rooftop to get the best views of Catania including the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna (the most active volcano in Europe).
Afterwards we head to a place called Canusciuti Sicilian Cafe to try a couple of different types of Arancine.
Not far from the cafe we came across an ancient Roman (Greek?) amphitheatre so made our way inside to check it out. We then headed to the main square in Catania where we saw the main cathedral in the city as well as the Elephant Fountain.
One of our favourite things about Catania was discovering some more local places. We went to a place called BarnAut to get a beer. It has a very local, bohemian vibe to it.
Lastly, since we've mainly been eating Sicilian and Italian food we decided it's time for something else. We made our way to a Korean restaurant called Panda where we had a few different (and delicious) Korean dishes.

In this episode, we get a little lost in Catania as we attempt to tell the difference between universities and monasteries! We find Sicily's largest church, get lost in the hallways of Europes 2nd largest monastery, and tour a 13th-century royal castle in Catania, Italy.
Catania is the second-largest Sicilian city after Palermo. It was destroyed to the ground seven times by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes from Mount Etna. The most recent catastrophic events in 1169 and 1693 forced the inhabitants to rebuild the city from scratch. The origin of the city dates back to 730 B.C. during the first arrival of ancient Greeks and this was the beginning of a long series of invasions and conquests.

How to spend a day in Catania?
In today's travel vlog, we explore Sicily's second largest city, Catania in 4k. During this summer we explored the eastern side of the biggest island in Italy and Catania is our first stop.
As with most of my vlogs, I give recommendations of what local food you must eat in the region, as well as the best restaurants and bars. We go to the famous Fish food market, La Pescheria to try some delicious seafood cones, we freshen up with the famous Sicilian Granita, try some local wine and appetizers by a local trattoria, go for Sunset views at the best rooftop bar in the Via Etna (The main street) and finish it off with a great dinner at one of the most praised restaurants of the city, Me Cumpadi Turiddu, where they serve traditional Sicilian dishes with a modern twist.
Besides food, we go sightseeing in some of the most recognizable sights of the city such as the main square where everything happens, the Piazza del Duomo and we climb the stairs to the top of the Chiesa della Badia di Sant'Agata to admire the city. I highly recommend you including this amazing view as one of the first things to do so you can get a sense of the sights.

Thank you so much everyone for watching, have you been to Catania? Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants. Catania has the best pistachio pastries in the world and the best pistachio ice cream. The churches and the palaces are stunning and the baroque architecture will amaze you. Stayed in the most beautiful luxury bed and breakfast in the historical center in Catania and loved every second. Solo travelling in Catania was amazing and I definitely need to come back for the Etna mountains and Palazzo Biscari. What have I missed in Catania? Would you like to travel here? Catania
Catania (Italian: [kaˈtaːnja]) is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse. It is the capital of the Province of Catania, and is the second-largest city in Sicily, the tenth in Italy, and the hundredth-largest city in the European Union.
Catania is known for its seismic history, having been destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1169, another in 1693, and several volcanic eruptions from the neighboring Mount Etna volcano, the most violent of which was in 1669.
Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434, it witnessed the opening of the first university in Sicily. Then in the 14th century and into the Renaissance period, Catania was one of Italy's most important and flourishing cultural, artistic, and political centers.
Geography
Catania is located on the east coast of the main island of Sicily, at the foot of the Mount Etna.
As observed by Strabo the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna was both a source of benefits and of evils. On the one hand, the violent outbursts of the volcano from time to time desolated great parts of the city's territory. On the other, the volcanic ashes produced fertile soil, especially suitable for the growth of vines. (Strab. vi. p. 269.)
